Seasons of Love

In late 2024, Ahon Gooptu and Jayati Chakraborty reached out to me with a request to direct Ahon’s play Seasons of Love. Ahon had seen a good amount of my work while in school, and had returned to the city with two theatre degrees from the USA and a slew of original scripts. Jayati has worked with me on several projects between 2007 and 2014, when I was regularly making work in Calcutta. Seasons of Love has been a labour of love for Ahon: he has worked on the script for five years, and it has seen several workshop versions in Calcutta and in the USA. It’s a pleasure and privilege to direct this beautiful and heartfelt play with three wonderful cast members.

Seasons of Love is a memory play with contemporary movement and music. Three generations of a Bengali family— communicating between Kolkata and Chicago—struggle to find semblances of love, hope, and connection despite the distance that separates them. Over four seasons across space and time-scapes; through Shakespeare, song, and a belief in the divine, the trinity attempts to find the light at the end of the tunnel in this new memory play about love and loss.

[glimpses from rehearsals]

I was returning to directing a full-fledged text driven play after a long gap. We began work on the production in June 2025 with a cast of Ahon, Jayati and Indudipa Sinha. The creative process began with explorations of images, movements, sounds and design ideas that had emerged for me from the text – perhaps this is how a dancer’s mind thinks when it comes to directing! Having built a visual vocabulary, we then moved into the the main content of the text, unpacking it bit by bit, weaving and juxtaposing this language with the physical and design language we already had.
The play explores the fragility and resilience of ties that bind us together (and could break us apart). Intensely personal for each one of us, Seasons of Love is also expansively universal in what it has to say, gently but firmly bringing back into focus relationships that have made us as much as we make them – across time, across space, with both presence and absence.
